Google Ads click tracking

DocID® provides website operators with a click-tracking service for measuring Google Ads campaign interactions. The tracking URL shows its next destination in the redirect parameter.

Google certification is pending. Do not activate this service in live Google Ads tracking templates until Google has approved the relevant domain and path.

Configuration

  1. Open the Google Ads integration in the Campaigns area of your company workspace. Select the website asset and enter the campaign information to generate the tracking template and Final URL suffix.
  2. In Google Ads, set the Final URL to the actual HTTPS landing page on the selected website. Paste the generated template into Tracking template and the suffix into Final URL suffix. The suffix must not start with a question mark.
  3. Use the complete generated template for campaign reporting. Keep Google’s ValueTrack placeholders, including {lpurl}, unchanged. In the examples below, replace {assetId} with your website asset ID and use your own campaign values.
  4. Check whether more specific URL settings override the template. Use Google Ads’ Test function and confirm the destination. After certification and activation, separately check that eligible campaign interactions appear in reporting.
Tracking template — example
https://docid.pro/cl/gads/{assetId}?campaign_name=Example&category=example&product=example&campaign_id={campaignid}&ad_group_id={adgroupid}&ad_id={creative}&keyword={keyword}&match_type={matchtype}&device={device}&network={network}&target_id={targetid}&click_id={gclid}&request_id={random}&redirect={lpurl}
Final URL suffix — example
utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=Example&utm_term={keyword}&utm_content={creative}&campaignid={campaignid}&adgroupid={adgroupid}&device={device}

Transparent redirection

The redirect parameter identifies the immediate next destination. It accepts a URL-encoded HTTPS URL for the selected website’s configured domain or a supported subdomain. A valid request returns HTTP 302 to that destination; campaign fields do not replace it with a different destination.

A request containing only redirect can test redirection, but does not replace the complete template needed for reporting. Put UTM parameters in the Final URL suffix or in the destination itself. The tracker does not add them to the onward URL.

With parallel tracking, Google may send the visitor directly to the landing page and call the tracker in the background. Preserve Google’s supplied destination and parameters, including gb when present. Do not replace {lpurl} with a fixed destination in the tracking template.

Access to the landing page

The asset ID identifies the website, not the visitor. Click tracking does not sign visitors in, verify a profession or grant access to protected content. The destination website’s normal access requirements remain applicable, including any existing eligible session.

Privacy and responsible use

Do not include names, email addresses, health information, credentials or secrets in campaign fields or destination URLs. Website operators remain responsible for assessing the applicable requirements, informing visitors and arranging any necessary agreements and consent. Click tracking is separate from account sign-in; Google and the destination website have their own processing arrangements.
